As you've probably heard by now, you can pop the hood by inserting
a *long* skinny screwdriver through the grille (or you may have
to remove the headlights) and pushing at the levers.
It always fails because the two plastic golf-tee-like pieces that
the cable runs through are prone to break with age. Once they break
(usually the stem), the cable keeps working itself free of the
loops at the end of the spring-loaded levers that release the hood.
Replacement is drop-dead simple: there's a cable clamp at one end
which you need to loosen and remove, and the tees just slide off.
My '91 has metal ones, so you should be able to get those as
replacements. Doesn't look like they'd ever break.
