Betcha bippy it's an accelerometer.
 
The big difference between the WR ur-quattro's ABS and the later MB's (not 
imported to the USA) is the addition of an accelerometer mounted under the rear 
seat.  It's an on/off (mercury switch) device that provides further 
(unspecified) input to the ABS system.
