The article I mentioned last time turned out to be a product review of the
new Osram Xenon/HID lights that the Ford Group A Rally car is using.
Benefits cited:  Durability (no filament to break)
                            Light quality (more like sunlight, therefore
colors are truer, and eyes pick up on objects faster)
                            Low power usage. (obvious reasons, and the loom
weighs less)        
                            Higher efficiency (lm/W)
                            Less heat (can use smaller lights for same output)

There were others, but I think I got the main points.  Don't know what these
bulbs cost, but the real expense is the controler/balast.  Very complicated.
