I'm assuming you had the 5 bar oil pressure gauge, which for some
strange reason Audi loves to use. The oil pressure on VW/Audi engines
runs much higher and you really would need a 10 bar/150 psi gauge to get
an accurate reading. On my '93 Corrado, VW saw fit to install a 10 bar
gauge. Cold startup pressure runs about 8-9 bar (~120-135 psi) at idle.
When car is warmed up oil pressure at idle might get as low as 2-3 bar.
At anything above idle, pressure runs around 6 bar once car is warmed
up. This is on a VR6 engine but I've had same experience with VW/Audi 4
cyl and 5 cyl engines. Your gauge always showed the same pressure
because it was pegged. Essentially the 5 bar gauge just tells you that
you have enough pressure. It doesn't tell you what it actually is, just
that it's enough.

Off course this is all moot anyway because neither VW or Audi, with the
exception of '89 on Audi 100/200/A6, have ever installed an oil pressure
gauge where you could actually see it.
