Re: Cold Start valve commonly bad?

I think I know what is happening, Graydon. I had the same problem with
my 86 5KCST, and it turned out to be nothing to do with the cold start
valve. I had all the same symptoms-fuel smell, etc. Turned out to be
#2 injector dripping upon shutdown, thus relieving all residual
pressure in the system. When cranking, it takes a while to build up
sufficient system pressure. Audi issued a TSB on this some time ago,
advising to replace all injectors with the latest version with viton
seals (035 133 551F). I found by pulling all injectors, leaving them
attached to fuel lines, and running pump to pressurize system, then
shutting off pump, I was able to see one which injecor dripped. It was
very obvious, as the tip remained in the plastic shroud when I pulled
the #2 injector. Replaced with new version from GPR-starts like car is
brand new!
