When you take out the Allen screw and drill out the shear bolt, only the
top section of the steering column comes out. It hooks into the lower
section via two pins that enter a yoke from behind. In an impact, this
disengages so the steering column doesn't get driven into the driver.
When you reassemble, this joint has to be pushed right home ("zum
Anschlag") and then clamped while you tighten up the bolts. The
microfiche says to use "normal water pump pliers" - I have a little
thumbscrew clamp in my toolbox that seems to work much better.
If the clamp pops off, you just pop it back on.
