125k is _nothing_ as regards the basic health of the engine - Audis regularly
go two or even three times as far on the original engine without a rebuild.
(Mine is 1988, 135k - others here have a _lot_ more.)
There _are_, however, quite a few items that start to show wear around the 100k
mark. Proper maintenance is the key - don't be frightened by the odometer, but
_do_ be frightened by anything and everything else.
Join the Quattro Club - learn all you can in the time - there's _lots_ in the
archives here (thanks, Dan) about 4000Qs, and get a professional assessment.
Make sure the examining engineer is _THOROUGHLY_ familiar with Audis and
especially with quattros.

Where is the instrument dimmer in the A4?
(My father's co-worker just got a 2.8 manual and absolutely loves it,
but cannot figure out where the internal light dimmer is. Obviously he
also cannot figure out where the instruction manual is, but at least
he was smart enough to get an Audi. :)

Yes, it will "filter" out the AC ripple, but the "filtering" is not lost
when you take the power directly from the alternator; it is just not as
"clean". Still, this ripple is small and shouldn't significantly affect
bulb life. More detrimental is the higher voltage that you get by using
relays from the alternator/battery to get power to the headlamps. Bulbs
rated at 12V will simply not last as long when operated at 14V.

Subject: Wheels etc for 5k?
Hey guys,
I'm seeking opinions on 15" or 16" wheels which look good in an understated
way i.e. not too flashy (no chrome here) for my '87 5ktqw. I'm looking
for 15x7 or 16x7 so if anyone has aftermarket wheels for sale, let me know.
Any comments on Borbet Type H on an Audi would be welcome. Tire Rack
doesn't have much to offer for the 5k. I heard that Mercedes and Audi 5k
share the same bolt circle of 5x112 but I guess the offsets are different.
I'm planning to put in stiffer springs/shocks later this year, lowering it a
tad and add a deeper front spoiler with some good driving lights. Has
anyone dealt with Erubuni Corp in NYC, advertises body kits in EC? Has
anyone looked into flaring the fenders to stuff more rubber in there? 17"
wheels w. 235/40s would be nice :). Going for the DTM look. Anyone with
H&R springs, how much did they lower the car and how's the ride?
If anyone is interested in my stock 15x6 wheels, let me know or else I may
keep them for snows.
p.s. to all who expressed interest in my wagon when I was thinking of
selling, looks like I'm keeping it since my sister's VW Fox was totalled.
I'm keeping the '88 5ks in the family by selling it to her but I
still get to maintain it. That's 2 Audi converts in my family and I'm
working on my Dad who loves the wagon.

"Active aerodynamics," or in Marketing parlance, a USP (unique selling
proposition). The VW Corrado had such a "feature" as well. Darn near
useless at the speeds mortals travel. The sort of thing you'd expect from
the gee-whiz feature-laden Japanese cars of recent past.

Yes, and it's an interesting thought.
One problem I have with the 170/100s is _VERY_ short bulb life. Ten bulbs in
fourteen months. It's a royal PITA with the ur-quattro, since the only way to
replace the right-hand bulb is to take the headlight unit out of the car.
It's 100w element that goes - which leads me to suspect (but _only_ suspect)
that 130/100s would show the same phenomenon.
I do drive with the lights on most of the time, though. 1,000 miles per bulb?

I think it goes up at 40mph and back down at 20mph or so (YMMV by

This is the active aero wing. I think they're standard on non-turbo ones.
On the turbo models, there's one fixed whale tail because the intercooler
does not allow space for a active mechanism.

.. yes the new Porsches have an actuator to raise the panel above a cer-
tain speed to improve the aerodynamics, the first car that I saw with that
feature in the US was the VW Corrado ... It's kinda reminiscent of Hans
Stuck's aerodynamic device he used to put in the back window of his Trans

This kit mounted the driving lights in the lower grill under the bumper and
not in place of the reflectors ... the euro-bumpers are mounted differently
and can be transplanted but getting your hands one in the US could be quite
difficult. BTW, the foglight kit is NLA although I do have one that I will

I will ask only ONCE that your game end on this. This post was to q@coimbra

"supposedly kicks" my messages back, I assure you I have NO problem excluding
you from any private posts or CC, btdt. You are a member of this list,
therefore these returns are not warranted and outright unacceptable. THIS AT
ONCE. Either fix your "software" Mr. Fletcher, or again I will be forced to

Still smiling at the effort, but this really is silly and petty. My

IMHO Audi's approach to marketing sports cars is "They'll figure it out
for themselves ..." and is extremely disappointing. You'd think that Audi
would take a cue from BMW or MBZ or a number of the Japanese marques and
market products from the sport division! It isn't clear to me that they
have any intention of marketing the quattro as a sports car ... I'm think-
ing that they are using it to ridicule the SUV market ... but frankly Su-
baru is doing a better job IMHO ...
Were there ANY ads for the S6? I got the biggest kick about hearing a
dealer tell me that they had to dig to find out that the 95.5 S6 was
approved for the state of California! HELLO! ... No wonder they sold
so few of them!
I am a big Audi Sport fan! ... I am just frustrated by the fact that
Audi doesn't seem to care ... maybe you can help to change that ...

It's the left knob protruding out of the instrument cluster. This
knob, when turned, serve as the instrument light dimmer, and when
pulled, is used to adjust the clock.
If he couldn't even figure this out, I can't imagine how he could

The battery is still connected to the alternator and lights by two 8 gauge
circuits. What is that thing in capacitive terms, about 10 farads or
something (how many coulombs per volt is 400 amp hours? I'm too lazy to
figure it out) So you shouldn't lose the filtering effect. There also
shouldn't be any meaningful AC effects after the voltage regulator... JTH

It doesn't and then idles ok. Any ideas what this might be ? Also, the idle
seems to be somewhat erratic and I think the car idles rough, but that
might be another story.
Sound like it's time to diagnose the fuel injection system...OXS and duty

Get a Borla universal muffler from Max at AVS, check the quattro web site

To me it has the nicest looking tip around. It is stainless steal and a
lifetime warranty if you don't throw your receipt and proof of purchase
