Re: A4 Steering Wheel Removal
Today I finally removed the center hub from my A4 sport steering wheel.
It was very easy to do. I removed the two Torx T-30 fasteners from
behind the wheel, and the airbag assembly pulled straight out. It is a
surprisingly compact package. A short, 4 or 5 inch wire connects the
airbag to the steering wheel bulkhead connector. I was *VERY* careful
not to tug or touch this wire with the RED connector. I do not know if
red connectors are used to indicate "airbag" wires throughout the rest
of the vehicle.
I lubricated the three mini horn spring assemblies with silicone spray,
and placed the unit back. Very nice design, the airbag and horn assembly
plate are isolated from the steering wheel. I guess this helps to
steady the steering wheel over bumpy roads since the airbag is on the
heavy side. Anyway, the squeeks are gone and my sanity is back.
I'm not recommending that everyone try this at home. Please use caution
if you do. I was careful to stay out of harm's way. BTW, thanks
all for your helpful recommendations.
