Re: 85 5ks climate control / defroster

The ticking sound is most likely broken gears in the motor that
mounts on the climate controller. This motor moves a cable back
and forth which regulates the temp. Mt. Auto in CO. sells these
     little motors.

Greetings,

I'm fortunate enough to have an 87 5kq that is in excellent condition,
but my first Audi, which I still own, is an 85 5ks that as you can
imagine from its year, has a few problems.

The car is in good mechanical condition, and my girlfriend really likes
driving it, auto trans and all. However, its most serious ailment is
with the defroster and the whole climate control thing.

The defroster doesn't blow out any air. After driving the car for a
while, one can sense the heat coming out from the ducts, but it
certainly is not blowing out. Furthermore, a ticking sound develops that
comes from the glove box area. Oddly, if I raise the temperature on the
climate control, the ticks go away, until the car heats up to that temp.
Then the noise comes back and I would have to further raise the temp.
After a while, a certain tradeoff has to be made between the ticking
noises or extreme heat.

Does anyone have any recommendations as how to fix this. I'm wondering
if this is big bucks, because it might be more economical to pick up
another Audi.

Thanks for all your help,
