Seal Tool
As of tomorrow, I will be the proud owner of the $99 tool which pulls
the crankshaft oil seal on the I-5 and most Audi 4's. I figure it's
worth it to avoid screwing up the seal recess area or having to pull
the oil pan and pump.
BTW - Baum in Florida (800/848-6657) had it for $99. Assenmacher in
Denver (800/525-2943) wanted $166, and Zelenda (888/892-8348) wanted
$149. I should note that Zelenda was nice enough to give me their
competition's numbers when they could not identify the tool without
an Audi number. Once I had the number (from the Bentley) all three
firms could find it. All three supply Audi/VW tools.
If list-members who are contemplating this job want to use the tool,
talk to me. I will say that I won't turn loose of it without some
security...you know, trust everyone but cut the cards??
BTW: talked with Jim at Blaufergnugen and he has a trick for pulling
the crankshaft oil seal. He takes a hammer and gently taps a drywall
screw into each side of the seal's metal shoulder, screws them in
slightly, then uses them to pull it. I debated this and decided that
for once in my life, I'd spend the $$ and avoid lousing up the
mechanism. I have certain talents in that regard...
Cheers...
