Wheels: TSW Stealth vs MSW Type 55 -Reply
Mark, I too am looking for wheels for my 87 5kTQ. Too bad the OZ wheels don't
fit as they are forged vice cast and are therefore much stronger. The only
forged wheel I have investigated is the Fisk. In our size they are a 'code
blue' retail of $840 each!! Sooo then, back to the cast wheels. The MSW 55 has
exposed lugs but the MSW 55C has covered lugs and should be easy to clean. Look
at the Tire Rack page on the net or pages in most any car mag for a picture.
The guy at Intended Acceleration says that for stock wheel wells one shouldn't
go over the 7" width and above all keep the 45 mm offset otherwise things will
rub. Understanding that sidewall flex is part of the suspension system equation
and to go too low in profile is like stiffening your springs, I wonder if the
optimal tire for the 5kTQ might be a 225/50-16 Anyone have any experience with
gimongous wheels and low profile tires on these cars?
Anyone have a line on reasonably priced test equipment and tools? Looks like I
may need the VW 1441, I think it is, pressure gauge for troubleshooting the
hydraulic system. I've only had my car for two weeks and the Bently manual
seems to reference this gauge on every other page in the steering and brake
sections. I do, in fact, have a 'brake' warning light which the book tells me
means everything from 'please top up the resevoir' to 'you're going to die.'
Having driven Rover sedans for 25 years I find that I get bored when driving
without the exilerating aroma of brake fluid dripping from some unknown place.
(You mean you've never 'lost' a quart of brake fluid only to find the vacuum
servo is full of it and being slowly sucked through the vacuum line to the
engine where it is burned in occasional great white stinky billows??)
Regards, Gross Scruggs, Monterey, CA. '87 5kTQ, and a bunch of Rovers in
Maryland...they wouldn't make the trip.
