lost my motor "guard"

Which plate, Tim?
There's a fibreboard thing under the 80's radiator plenum chamber - you can
leave that off in most cases without too many problems. I think its main
function is stopping stray rocks from hitting the radiator. There's a plate on
the other side of turbo cars to protect the oil cooler and improve the airflow
to it - that one I would _NOT_ do without. And then there are accessory sump
guards available for all of the cars, but they're pretty hard to knock off in
snow.
