A-belt questions

Hi folks,
   I'm a novice at repair work and have a few questions on the procedure for
tightening a loose alternator belt. I tightened the belt a few months ago, but
not adequately and ended up stripping the bolt (the one with the teeth on it).
 
(1) Proper procedure? I noticed that there are three pivot points for the
alternator. I previously loosened all three, but ended up with the damage to
the bolt.

(2) Will a VW alternator teethed bolt (for lack of a better term) be the same
as for the Q? I took a peek under the VW (91 Golf GL) the other day and the
bolt looked identical. Since I'm heading over to the VW dealer tommorow anyway,
I figured I could save some time if they were one and the same part. TIA!
