I have an 81 coupe and it is a US car, it is pretty much the same as the
other pre-84 coupes but there are subtle differences (see archives). The
body shell is the same as the 82 etc and not a different one as you
suggest.

ps - its a great car, only done 64K miles and since it has spent all its
time in Seattle (no road salt) the body it absolutely perfect. I wanted a
golf but had to buy this when I saw it, its great !
