Mike, I've had a Colortune set-up since about 1976. I've used it mostly to tune
the twin SU's on my Rover 2000TC, and it performed quite well for a steady-state
use. It really does work... you can see the combustion color change from the
too rich orange, to the ideal bunsen burner blue, to the whitish-blue too lean
as you adjust the mixture. It works well for basic ball park adjustments. The
problem with it is: you can't test in dynamic situations, (unless like my Brit
acquaintance Philip Hedley you crawl out the open sunroof of the Rover 3500S to
adjust the carbs, no bonnet, at 80mph!), do you trust that the other cylinders
are behaving like the one you are examining which has a non-standard
'sparkplug'?
A better solution is to invest in a real-time exhaust gas analyzer. Position
the probe at the exhaust and drive around monitoring the gas readouts. Admitted
problems here are: cost, and the exhaust stream presents an 'average' of the
conditions in all the cylinders so if one has a problem then it may be oculted
by the output of the others. Your call.
