Volvos 'n Audis

Amen....not to mention that the original post left it totally unclear what
was fact and what was, to use a word directly from the post, "rumor." For
those who think it's not irresponsible to portray rumors as fact, take a
look at Audi resale values (and the state of the company) following the
whole U-A fiasco.

On a related subject, I've always wondered why the popular press only
mentions 2 brands, V*lvo and M-B, when they talk about the "safest cars in
the world." I know they both make wonderfully safe cars, but Audis have
consistently tested as well as, or *better* than, any other car on the
road. Why does the press always forget that when talking about the safest
cars? For that matter, why doesn't Audi make a bigger deal of it? Not
that I'd want to blow the lid off our little secret.... :) Just curious.

This is a shock test, not a spring test. If the shocks are worn, they
won't absorb the bouncing of the car. (I also think 2 times indicates
     worn-out shocks.)

the tAp intercooler. My question is: How much $$$$ we talkin'? If you
are talking big money, you may want to try and find a stock one in the
junk yard for cheap--and wait. I know for a fact several on this list
are working on intercooler upgrades--that really will be an "upgrade" not
just a modification. Stay tuned.

MAybe you could enter a race where all of the cars go back down the

Subject: Brake BMP for 90Q20v

Hi Folks,

How much fun is this? I had to draw up a rough bitmap of the disc
brake rotor for my 1990 90Q20v. The bitmap
contains all the measurements from top hat (offset) to width and diameter
to within +/- 2mm...but is not to scale.
If anybody wants it, I'll send it out as is (that is...in BMP file
form).
Getting the corrrect rotor (part number suffix 301"A") is not fun
unless you want to get hosed by a dealer.
This is a potential problem for any 1990 90Q20v owners that have not done
the G60 conversion and have the original
Girling calipers with a 256mm rotor as opposed to the 276mm rotor.

 Question regarding 89' 80 quattro.

I recently purchased this car from a friend of a friend and it
has 117k on the odometer. Everything is perfect except for the sluggish
manner in which the sunroof slides closed. It seems well lubed and does
this in any temp. Will someone please tell me this is perfectly normal
and it will last forever so I can rest easy tonight? I've been kinda
helping it along so it will close faster. Will this do more harm than
good? Any speculation on how much longer it will last?

your help will be greatly appreciated.

I just wanted to apologize to the list for the unintended off-color remarks at
the end. A fellow lister (Todd) pointed it out to me.

I posted the note about the gas exposure risk as an advisory. I've been guilty
in the past of improperly handling gasoline. Just recently, I replaced the fuel
lines in my Q and spent a good hour or two with my hands soaked in gasoline
while I fiddled underneath the car. Gas is a something we all handle with
regularity, and most likely with little regard. If I had been thinking, I
should have washed my hands immediately upon contact with gas and probably have
even worn gloves. I figured that since I was "awoken" out of my ignorance by
Christian's unfortunate incident, I would pass along the warning. Gasoline IS a
toxic substance that should be handled with care.

I didn't intend to put a foul flavor to the post with the off-color ending
towards Christian. It was late, I was tired, and I fired it off without
rereading the post. I extend my sincerest apologies to Christian and the rest
of the list.

Subject: Blocked cat, or bad gas? It certainly smells like bad gas!

Just this past weekend, and through to today, I've noticed the ol' rotten
egg smell eminating from my '92 100 after short trips (less than 10 miles).
I searched the archives and read about the possibility of the catalytic
converter having some type of blockage (which also may explain the rocking
engine idle due to excess back pressure), so I called my mechanic and
asked him about it. He suggests trying another brand of gas (I'm currently
using Texeco premium, 93 octane), and I'm wondering if anyone has had a
problem with certain brands of gasoline?

John, I had A510's on a Golf GTI and an MGBGT in the UK and they are
simply brilliant, a lot of the racing/fast road people in the UK have been
fitting them and the magazines have raved about them. They are not as good
as the A008 for out and out track work but are a whole lot better for the
more variable road surfaces we encounter. I enquired about them in the US
and most of the tire places dont know what your talking about although I
think tire rack has them only in 1 size, a 16" I think.

Subject: RE: Starting blues...

Well, heres my 2 cents on this. My 84 4000s never gave me trouble
starting until last winter, all of a sudden, on a cold start it would
take 6 or 7 tries and a lot of cranking. I took it to a shop, and they
went through the basics (ie. new spark plugs and stuff) No difference.
Then I took it to my mechanic here in winnipeg (german car specialists),
They did the same basics( again new spark plugs, check timing and
stuff). And again no difference. Then they changed all 5
injectors($$$$). Still no difference. Now we were getting frustrated. He
said it is common for audis to do this. I dont think so, we sat down and
looked at everything, only thing we hadnt checked yet was the
distributor. Next day found the distributor was shorted. Picked one up
from a used parts yard, starts fine now. I guess dont overlook the
obvious. All the work I got done ran about 6-700 bucks, whereas the
distributor was only like 40. Could've save a whole lotta trouble. Hope
it helps.
