4kq failure points
My '84 was very durable. 1/4million mile car, easy (with maintenance).
Here go the failures:
* fuel pump (75k)
* starter (75k)
* control arm bushings (100k)
* shocks (100k) [make sure you do the upper front strut bearings and bump stops
while its open]
* muffler (every 3 years)
* most of the door latches - lubrication helps prevent this
* radiator (150k)
* clutch master (100k)
* front wheel bearings and outer CVs; (90-140k)
*%$!@ ignition wires (every 18 mos)
* differential servo (180k-ish)
* rear differential mounts (100k) [also went right on schedule on my 91 20v,
clunk, shift, clunk]
* radiator overflow (120k) radiator was leaking ever since 120k. Prestone's
cheap.
Never touched the engine, trans, diffs. Changed the diff fluid every 75k.
Changed the oil every 3k.
changed the other fluids every 2 yrs.
The 4ks have always had a better reliability reputation than the 5ks,
and the 4kq seemed to be way overbuilt. I suppose they stole the
parts from the higher powered TQ
