Oxy Sensor Question

Question of the Day! (For my brain, anyhow)

Can the "Three wire, heated Ox sensor" be replaced with the "much less
costly"
single wire sensor, and still function as should be expected?

Strangest thing happened to my wife's 88-90! It stalled, sputtered,
and finally
just wouldn't run, or start! Under the bonnet I went in search of
answers!

Found quite a few minor problems! First the plug for the heating
element wires
going to the Ox sensor, was damaged, and had been disconnected, for
probably
a few weeks! Found the cars timing was off by several more degrees
toward BTDC!
Third, I was running very rich! Evidence by removing #1 spark plug,
and it was
BLACK and reeked of gas! Being the CIS-E III Jetronic System, it
never gave any kind of error code, or problems up to this point!

Tried several things, to get it to run, checked all associated under
the hood "electronic" pieces with the digital volt meter. What I found
was a bad Ox sensor, and the electro-magnetic fuel pressure actuator
was receiving voltages to drive toward max lean! To the point where it
was shutting off the engine! Plus the CO was way off toward the rich
side!(Strange, very strange!) Especially since no one has
had to work on this car for almost 2 years!

Well got the car to run, adjusted the CO back to middle area, but
cannot connect the
Ox sensor!

So will a "one-wire sensor"($26) work in place of the
"three-wire"($114), or
am I "SOL"?
