80q lower ball joints

 As the new owner of an old Audi, I seem to come up with different 
questions every day. The car is an 89' with 118k on it and I have been 
told the joints will need replacing in the near future for around $300 
including labor. Is this something that really needs to be done? I drive 
the car mostly on the interstate, and seldom very aggressively on the 
back roads. Anyone ever heard of these things breaking?
