'87 5k emission info...
My mother's '87 5k failed the draconian IM240 emission test again today
(even though it's running better than it has in the past 50k miles!) and I
no longer have easy (read: FREE) access to an exhaust gas analyzer ... I
looked around the engine compartment for the little white test plug to
measure the O2 sensor duty cycle but I don't think there is one as I
couldn't seem to find it.
I guess I could measure the 02 voltage directly and/or the current to the
differential valve but I don't know how to correlate these measurements with
CO output ... btw, the car failed on NOX and since I replaced nearly every
hose, vacuum line and gasket when I went through the head a while back, I'd
be surprised if there's any vacuum leaks. Any clues what I should be
looking for or is this simply the result of needing to reset the FI after
doing the head? (Truth be told, I'm pretty ignorant about emissions stuff
... probably started back in '85, when I decided the best way to cure the
perennial FI woes on my BMW 530i was to pull all the Bosch stuff and install
a set of triple Weber carbs in its place! There's nothing quite like
playing with emulsion tubes and main jets in my book ... <sigh>)
Thanks!
