It'll probably do all of the above. I'd change belt and pump immediately.

The 'old type' handles all do that, on VWs and Audis alike. Easy?
Relatively. Cheap? Depends on source. Used ones are likely to break again
soon. New ones have been strengthened.

I once came back to my old Jetta, and found a case of beer inside, and all
doors locked. Turned out that a friend of mine, who owed me said beer,
opened and locked the car easily with the keys to his equally old Passat.
Audi locks are equally well constructed- you're warned. Someone could have
easily taken my stereo or whatever, without even leaving any damage.

Sounds like the usual- earth problems, bad connectors, etc. Better measure
current throughout the system without bothering with the tank.
