The 136bhp figure only relates to the peak engine power at one particular
rpm. The newer engines produce the same peak power, but they produce more
power at lower revs. You really need to see the graphs - the area under the
graph, particularly the lower end of the graph gives a more meaningful idea
of how powerful the car feels under normal driving conditions. I rarely use
the 5800rpm (or whatever the actual figure is) at which peak power is
developed.
BTW, my 1989 Avant 2.2E (2226) is quoted as 138bhp, 101kW and the late 1989
2.3E versions (2309) produce 136bhp, 100kW (but they have cats).

It probably still is pretty close to 136bhp now you've got the FI sorted
out. Audi's have often been known to produce more than their rated power
once run in properly, and even with slighlty worn engines, do not deviate
much from this figure over their life (assuming proper tune up). Usually
the first signs of a poorly engine are starting and idling problems.
