Engine codes and swaps (UK 2144cc)

Hello Phil, Joe et al.

I am puzzled about engine codes (isn't everyone?).

When you talk about different engine codes for a Quattro engine (1B, 2B, MB,
WR etc.), what does it mean? These are all the same capacity, aren't they
(2144cc)? Which of the following apply?
 - different configurations of same basic engine (e.g. different FI system,
exhaust)
 - different components in same engine (e.g. different cam, oil squirters)
 - different head (e.g. different valve diameters, combustion chamber
geometry)
 - different block (e.g. different C.R., bore, stroke, crankshaft, piston
crown shape)

Now for specifics!

I have a 1984 80q (engine code KK, 2144, 136hp, 100kW) with an engine that
smokes on the overrun. I have a write-off 1983 Avant (engine code WC,
2144cc, 136hp, 100kW) that is in much better condition. The engines look
identical although the air intakes look slightly different.

Can I swap engines?

What about exhaust manifolds? (I think the one in the 80q has been ticking
for a couple of years!) Can I swap them?

Any information gratefully received.
