upgraded ISV?

Hello all-knowing q-listers,
I have a question concerning my ISV. Some of you may remember that I've
complained about engine rocking at idle since I bought my car 2 months ago.
I just got off the phone with Rietzl Audi, and they're recommending
replacing the ISV with an "upgraded" model. My question is, what is this
upgrade? According to the service rep, my current ISV isn't keeping pace
with the engine and the new ISV was made more "robust". Have any other
'92-'93 100 owners had a problem with their ISV, and subsequently replaced
it with this "upgraded" model?

Oh, here are some scary numbers, and the reason why I balked, $266 for the
new ISV and an hour labor at $55/hr. So now my choices are, 1) hold off and
spread the cost over time (in other words, save up the money and don't tell
the wife), 2) buy the part (at a discount) somewhere and replace it myself
(is this possible for an EXTREME novice?), or 3) take out the ISV and just
try cleaning it first.
