Sticky throttle linkage

I have a persistant problem with my 87 5KCST: the throttle linkage is sticking somewhere and I can't seem to figure out the source of the problem. The car is an automatic, so the cable goes from the pedal to the transmission, and from there to the linkage on the engine. Everything is fine up top; It would seem the problem is in the linkage with transmission. I'm not sure what goes on there, except it controls the gear kick-down. As long as I only use 1/4 of the travel, everything is fine. When I go beyond this point the spring at the engine doesn't quite pull the linkage back to off. The maddening part is that this condition is intermittant, i.e. didn't do it at the mechanic's yesterday.

Any ideas??
