Ur-Q exhaust questions...

As an experiment, I removed the tail section of my '85 Ur-Q's exhaust system
... the center section ends right alongside the rear diff and only 3 bolts
and two hangers hold the rest of the system in place. Took all of 10
minutes to remove it and since the exhaust ends several feet behind the
driver, I don't think there's too much of a potential safety problem with
inhaling CO...

Surprisingly, the car doesn't sound that much louder although the exhaust
sound does have a considerably lower tone to it. I'm also surprised by the
"funny" sound the motor makes above 5k ... I can't describe it but it's
definitely unique and unlike that of any other car/truck/moped/lawnmower
I've ever heard.

Anyway, my brief testing indicates the car is about .2 sec. quicker in the
official Q-list 30-70 mph test so I am definitely thinking there is
something to be gained here ... has anyone else experimented and/or
documented this with their Ur-Q? I was thinking of grafting a Borla SS
muffler or a B&B Fabrication carbon-fiber muffler on to replace the rusting
OEM one and leaving the rest of the exhaust alone but now I'm thinking
there's merit in replacing everything from the cat back with a larger (3")
pipe. I know there was a thread on this recently but as I recall, the focus
was on cheaper rather than better performing alternatives...

Any input on this? I've got to get it done in the next two weeks so I can
take the car to San Diego to run in the SCCA Solo II Divisional event being
held at Jack Murphy Stadium on the weekend of 5/31-6/1...
