Climate control blower fan stays on high, '91 200q

Question for the list:
This morning, my heat and a/c only works on high fan, no matter what setting
(i.e., normal, low or high).  Each of the separate settings (auto, defrost,
bi-level, econ, off) seems to work fine; the vents switch around etc.
I've got the Bentley (bought just this week) and will be perusing in depth
tonight.

On a related note, is there a method to read the computer fault codes without
ordering the special VAG tool?

Finally, I stopped at Pep Boys and bought a new rubber o-ring for my oil
dipstick.  The old one was not elastic and didn't seal (dipstick was very
loose); the new one actually fits quite tightly.  I believe the o-ring I used
was a little small; but a bigger one would require lots of effort to fit in
the dipstick hole.
