re: climate controller problem with '91 200: Solved!
Solved what was wrong with my climate control: fan stayed on full no matter
what setting/temp or fan speed button (except off). Ends up being a loose
connection at the back of the controller.
Easiest fix I could ask for; payed for the Bentley. I went by my shop to ask
them likely solution: they suggested the controller unit was bad, and offered
to swap in a used one to test it. Luckily for me, they couldn't find the
used one, and I said I'd come back. Had they put in the used controller,
everything would have worked. So, by trying to fix it myself, I noticed that
the multiconnector wasn't snapped in fully with the catch on the passenger's
side. After reconnecting it firmly (very very firmly, now I see why it
wasn't on right to start), it works fine. So, I saved the price of a used
controller and labor, i.e., paid for the Bentley.
This seems to be one area the manual is very good; lots of troubleshooting
and error codes that will read out directly on the unit being tested.
On another note: took off the leather shift boot. The boot is lined with a
rubber boot, and that had rubbed through, liberally spreading rubber dust
throughout the plastic shift bearing. I cleaned it out best I could, and
regreased it. The rubber doesn't seem abrasive, so I'm hoping no damage
done. I ended up cutting back the worn areas of the rubber boot to avoid a
future problem. Why is the leather lined with rubber, to insulate against
noise and heat?
Sorry this is so long; last bit: Does anyone have any further ideas on where
the alarm controller could be located? The bentley says above the glove box;
my mechanic has had the car almost entirely apart following the harness, and
it isn't there or anywhere he can find. The mounting holes are there; no
controller. I've got an intermittant fault, and can't fix it without doing
pin-out tests on the controller.
