I was going to stay out of this, but. I have changed several timing
belts, and so long as the engine was in time to begin with. I have
never worried about finding top dead center. Here is what I do. And
I am sure that I will get blasted. But then I changed my sons belt
last night on his 1.8 and it took 1 hour from opening the tool box,
until he started it up and backed out of the drive way. I just go
ahead and take everything off to get down to the belt. Then I use
liquid paper and put a spot on the crank, intermediate and cam gears
as well as spots on the belt itself. Remove the old belt, try not to
let things move around too much. Duplicate the dots on the new belt
(count the teeth). Put the new belt on making sure the dots on the
belt line up with the dots on the gears. Adjust tension, put it all
together and drive away. I've done this several time on a variety of
cars and have never had a problem.
