I struggled with lifter noise for years - replacing various lifters
(although never the complete set at one time).  The problem was finally
corrected when I replaced all the valve stem guides and had 3 cracks in
the exhaust manifold repaired.  These were done at the same time, so I'm
not sure which actually cured the problem, although I've heard that the
manifold cracks can make a sound that sounds like lifter noise.
