Evidently U.S. airbags have a higher inflation speed. I did read an
article in one of the mags a few months back and I believe the figures
are around 200mph U.S. and 160mph Euro. And yes, they increased the
inflation speed due to the greater number of idiots here who believe it
is their right NOT to wear seat belts!!
Because of the additional speed, anyone closer than 11 inches to the
bags can get friction burns or, in some cases killed or injured, due to
the force of the explosion - all this is still very open to debate!
Very topical subject here due to deaths and injuries attributed to this
type of airbag. Unfortunately, the topicality of this subject is
exacerbated by the highly litigious nature of the U.S. society.
