Help: Clinking Sound?

HI people,
Recently, I just purchased a '85 Coupe GT with 107k miles on it.
The owner was the first owner of that car.

The car is making a clinking sound while cold start and during idle after
the engine warms up. However, the sound goes away when you the rpm is 3k
and above. The owner said is the lifter problem, while my local mechanic
said is a leaking exhaust manifold. 
I hope you guys can give me some info on this one.

Another problem, when I cold start the car, the car seem wants to die off,
but then the rpm picks up again. IS there anything I need to chaange to
cure these problems.

p.s is there any defect parts warning on '85 Coupe GT that need to be
taken care off?
