I must once again express my bafflement at 1 litre per 1k being considered
"low". Neither my ur-quattro (140k miles) nor my Coupe GT (250k+) use any oil
between changes. Yes, I _do_ know what the book says.

I've only seen this once, in an over-filled engine. But it happened when
_hitting_ 4200rpm, not when backing off from it.

You've either got the mother of all valve guide leaks, or extreme axial play in
the turbo. I think you have to take off both ends of the turbo ==> intercooler
hose, and check inside both the turbo and the intercooler. The turbo for axial
(as distinct from radial) movement, and the intercooler for excessive oil. If
it's just slimy, as usual, then it's inside the head.

I've been thinking about a third possibility - a head gasket failure. Are the
plugs equally fouled, or is one much worse than the others?
