If I am not mistaken, the eurovan engine has an increased deck height and 
longer rods. Long rods generally make for a smooth engine up top, long 
throw cranks do not. 

As for cams.... What's the duration of the intake? Exhaust? The stock 
exhaust cam on the US 16V VWs is about a 258, it can be modified and 
installed as an intake cam (which is 250 euro, much less for US). Could 
be a cheap cam source.
