Probably just like the VW odos.  There is a gear that cracks or strips,
which you cannot get from VDO.  You can glue it, or check a model car
store for a similar gear, or send it out to one of the speedo places
(or VDO) to redo it.  Overseas Speedometer in TX has been 
recommended by several people.
