Classic Car evening
Our local village pub had a "Classic Car" evening last night, in association
with the local Jaguar Enthusiasts Club.
Quite fun. An Aston Martin DBS, a Lamborghini Coutach, a _HUGE_ old Rolls-
Royce Phantom Six, any number of V12 Jaguar XJSs (most with "For Sale" signs),
two TR6s (one _ARRIVED_ on a flatbed to much jocularity) and around forty other
vehicles of some vintage, including a Jowett Jupiter and a beautiful pink
Cadillac Coupe de Ville.
And, of course, an ur-quattro - up on ramps and stands so the admiring public
could look underneath.
An interesting diversity. Some had immaculate bodywork but were filthy under
the hood. Some were immaculate both sides of the metal - but it was all
appearance. One of the Jaguars' engines had been given the beauty treatment -
all polish and chrome - but clattered and smoked like a tractor.
>From wandering round and listening to them arrive and leave, I got the
impression there was only one engine in the place that I'd trust as far as the
next town. Especially the Jaguars, which was a surprise. Even an almost new
AC Cobra replica spat and coughed at idle, and missed badly when asked to go up
the hill. In contrast, the ur-quattro purred to the exit and then spun all
four wheels in the quickest departure of the evening.
Mechanically, the least impressive was the Lamborghini.
