89-200 universal oxygen sensor

I recently had installed a universal oxygen sensor purchased from German
Parts and Restoration. Work was done while on vacation and when I returned
it seemed the car had less pickup than with the old unit which of course
is now discarded. It is possible perception is in error since I was
driving a more powerfull rental car while on vacation. Wires
were soldered in covered well so problem should not origionate here.  Has
anyone exprienced a similar problem with a universal sensor?  Is
disconnecting unit a true test if it is cause of problem? Can problem
be caused if the garage did not reset the CO2 fuel mixture setting?
