89-200 gauges not working

A couple weeks ago gauges all stopped working (speedometer Ok). If the
computer readout is on - number  of miles to empty - it is blank,  but
changing it to any of the available readouts, then it works.  Problem is
intermittent, but on a regular basis.  No sure pattern but my wife thinks
it is more prevelant after on a restart after a short run.  Problem first
started after dash was pulled to replace a defective ignition switch.
Garage is willing to pull out dash again to recheck connection to harness,
but hate to do this if there is some other explanation based upon someone
comparable experience
