I think the emission is most important for Audi & VW engineers. And, the
drop of 2.2 20V turbo and 2.0 SOHC from A6 and S6 last year was from the
same reason. That was official report from Audi.

Well, I think in this case we're talking about 2 completely different
engines. The 16v VW head was designed in 83, first used widely in 85. The 2
liter was developed in 88 or 89, implimented in the US in 90. But the 2
liter was very similar in design to the 1.8. The 20v 1.8 was designed and
tested in the last year or two. So it doesn't surprise me a whole lot that
the audi engine is much cleaner than the VW engine. 'Course, the VW is
faster.....:-)
