Your scenario sounds like the cir-clip that  holds the top of the socket
together to put tension on the ball popped off.  To get at it, remove the
shift boot.  In front of the parking brake handle is a square piece of
plastic trip that pops off with a small screw driver and a gentle prying
action.  This then gives access to the set-screw that holds the shift boot
down.  On the top right corner of the opening is a phillips head screw,
remove it.  Then lift the shift boot up.  You will now see an upside-down
U and between it is the ball and socket assembly,  The circlip goes around
the periphery of the top edge of the socket.  It may be a small PITA to
reinstall, just take your time and don't bend it out of shape too much.

Note: If you want to take off the shift boot entirely, unscrew the shift
knob and pull the boot off.
