Easy-to-break steering??

Strange thing happend to my '88 80. I went on a long trip week ago
(made 3700 km in 71 hours) and after coming back the car was hit in
the back by WV van while having steering wheel turned max left and on
gear . It happened at the parking lot and the van wasn't moving faster
than 2-3 kph. After finding no exterior damage I let the guy go, but
when I drove off I immediately noticed my steering wheel isn't in the
right position and some noise was coming from front suspention. As I
found out in my garage right steering shaft was bended at approx. 40
degrees :-O Now I wonder if it is really THAT easy to screw one's
steering system??
