UrQ Rad Replacement

"Here's the score so far on replacements for the main radiator in
my UrQ.

Original radiator - $500 (ouch)"

Why are you replacing it? If it is dying of old age, the aux rad could be
just as bad so add another $300 to that estimate

"One from a 1987 CGT with dual radiators- $220 (good, but still
need aux. radiator and no guarantee it will fit 100%)"

One from a 4000Q will fit for same $'s, BTDT, no need for aux w/setup

"Sportwheels custom single - $800 (Excelent, still in beta
version, v. expensive)"

Bring your (good) tanks to a good rad shop (I know 1 or 2) they can install
new
beefier core for 1/3 that BTDT.

" Didn't someone overheat with a
regular main w/ no aux?"

Plenty overheat with 2 radiators! BTDT

" Was there
really no reason that Audi put an aux. rad. in these cars?

Trying to reason why Audi did what it did in the early 80's, especially with
the UrQ can lead premature aging, look at the electrical system!! Audi also
put twin rads in the 80's and 90's and I've seen them run with only 1
replacement.
I run an UrQ with1+ bar of boost and so far during July + August have not
seen my temps at even 100C, in fact my oil cooler is thermostically
controlled to open at that temp and it's only done it during summer track
events. If your overly concerned, do what I did and run a junkyard 4000Q rad
for a bit and see how your car likes it, I know you'll love the extra space
to work with.

"Someone shed some light here before I'm stupid
and go with the cheap option combined with new low temp
thermostat and thermoswitch."

A low temp thermostat will not reduce your peak operating temps, just reduce
the opening temp, (which is why no thermostat does not resolve most cooling
problems, bad thermostat aside) ie. if your car runs at 95C during a 10 mile
hwy ride to work, it does not matter whether you have an 80C or 90C
thermostat, they'll both be wide open by then!

Good Luck,
Mike
