My guess?  The wire for the window regulator has come off its track and
now is being horribly mangled between the pulley and the metal bracket
holding the pulley.  Happened to me.  Sounded as you describe.  Fixable,
but it is quite hard (or at least it was for me) -- there is a procedure
somewhere in the archives for fixing window regulators, that is,
regulators where the motor still works and the cable is what is shot.  

Then again, maybe the whole damn regulator just quit.
