'86 5ktq

Audi wizards,The following is a problem with a5ktq '86 vintage. The car has no power
condition (most noticable above 4k rpm).Got this car used had a no start problem when I
got it.Timing belt worn and jumped a few teeth, replaced belt set timing, drove home. The
car runs very lean. The duty cycle, with the throttle just off idle, the duty cycle goes
to 68/72%.If the throttle is opened quickly there is a pop in the intake(lean),as the
throttle is opened gradually there is an occasional BURP in the exhaust(lean).

1. it does not have a hard start problem, hot or cold.
2. the duty cycle at idle is right on spec,38/42.
3. c/o at idle is right on.
4. system pressure is correct.
5. warm and cold pressures are correct.
6. fuel delivery volume is correct.
7. engine idles very smoothly.
8. residual pressure correct.
9. o2 sensor replaced.performs perfectly.(good response etc).

Since the the duty cycle is trying to make the mixture rich,to compensate for a lean
condition, the fuel system has been checked very thoroughly. The less expensive parts were
replaced with new ones.Others the parts were swapped with those from an identical (good
runnig car.IE: fuel distrib,air sensor,inlet temp sensor,warm up regulator.The
intercooler has been removed and checked as was the elbow and the hose to the t/body.
What is most confusing, says Fred as he chases his tail,is that the C/O is good and
indicates that the fuel hasn't been adjusted to compensate for a vacuum leak(good hydro
carbons at idle). When the duty cycle is at 68% if you pull the dip-stick the duty cycle
goes up to about 73%.It seems that the engine is tight, with no significant vacuum leaks.
The spark plugs are white (after 3,000 mi).Every thing shows a LEAN_LEAN_LEAN
condition. My question is WHY_WHY_WHY. The catc has been streamlined the accunulator has
been replaced because it was wet/stained.The code says "maximum ignition retard".
Replaced the temp sensors, the single wire ones.I don't think the multi-function enters
this picture.A/C and the coolant temp gauge works fine.

Sorry for the band width but I really need some help on this one.Any advice/suggestions
either private or to the list would be appreaiated.
