Re:86 coupe GT crash
Dear Dave,
Hope everything continues to be OK with your wife. Glad nothing worse
happened to her.
I don't have any leads at this point for a car, unless you live near Western
Canada? A couple of wagons are for sale in the Vancouver area. I live near
Calgary, AB, but have seen them advertised on the web site of the Vancouver
Buy and Sell.
European Car magazine is having a series on affordable used performance. The
1986 - 88 Quattro will be featured some time in the future. They are
featuring 10 used car buys. Maybe they will tell you when they plan the
Audi. They give some strong and weak points of the featured car and an
owners opinion.
As ownners of two 1968 5000CD turbo sedans, one Q, one not, I can say that
the racks, pumps, and bombs (yes all those things connected to that green
stuff) are expensive replaces unless you can do it yourself and/or have good
source for parts besides the dealer. An idependant honest mechanic is a good
thing to have with these cars. The cam belts are also very neccessary
maintenance items. If you find a used one, make sure nothing connected to
the green stuff leaks. The bomb can hide an internal leak unless checked
out carefully. Make sure the owner has not disconnected the warning system
for hydraulic leaks/problems. Make sure the cam belt is fresh and the water
pump was replaced at the same time. With the Q's make sure the
differentials are not leaking, engage and disengage smoothly with no hint of
howling. Also make sure the suspension and related bushings are up to snuff.
How is the boost? At least 1.2 but 1.4 is better. Radiator fan runs smoothly
with no sqeaks or grinds? All electricals work? Solid idle around 900 rpm
plus or minus 50 or so.
I guess in other words get it checked out well when the right one comes
along. They are fast, smooth, solid and comfortable cars with have decent
fuel economy for their size. Hope some of this helps as a primer.
David
