90q20v driveshaft woes

Dear Wise folks with skinned knuckles:

It appears that my driveshaft (1991 90q20v)  is worn.  Specifically, 
the center bearing allows a *great deal* of play, and the u-joint
shows minor, but ral, wear.

I'm looking for (a) advice, (b)experiences, and (c) sources for
the right parts, without buying a whole new driveshaft assembly
(>$1200) from Audi.  I think Osman whent through this and got a part from
