IMHO I think you'll want to recharge the system, and it's not that expensive. All you'll need to convert from (stock) R-12 refrigerant to R-134a are the
adapter fittings for the high and low pressure connectors. I know my 4ks has the necessary barrier hoses so I assume yours does. It's easy to check:
look at where the hose is crimped and if you see longitudinal crimps as well as circumfrential crimps, you're set. I know the Audi A/C isn't great to
start with, but R-12 is being taxed out of existence, which is why I feel R-134a is the way to go.
The reason you should charge the A/C is because normally the defrost setting on your heater actually activates the A/C compressor. My Dad explained it
to me once, but I'm not 100% sure why, I think it's used to dry the air.
BTW, how much did you pay for the O2 sensor, and did you replace the Cat at the same time?
