awful smell from rear brakes

Hello. I have a 93 100S and I had just gotten the rear brake rotors and
brake pads replaced at a local service center. Should've done it myself,
but school work is piling up and I need to graduate!!!!

Anyways. As I was driving back home I smelled a very strong and pungent
odor kind of like burning rubber coming from the new pads/rotor area. The
driver's side rotor was glowing bright red. . .actually was a cool sight. 

I know from experience that this is not a normal phenomena. What could be
wrong?!! I certainly don't want to be the main attraction at red lights
with glowing rotors. Could it be that the pads haven't bedded in yet or
something?
