The 'right' side of the road
Elliott, practically the entire world drives on the right-hand side of the
road, except... Japan, the UK and countries that were colonized by the UK,
including Australia and New Zealand. Anyone know of exceptions? Sweden, I
think it was, changed from the left to the right side over a "no drive"
weekend some 25 years ago.
Anyone know why the Brits chose the left side? I've heard an explaination
(something about carriage days and the drawing of swords with the right
hand) but would entertain a better one... Phil?
The only exception, I think, to the left/right orientation is in Washington
DC, where Bill Clinton tries desparately to drive down the middle of the
road, picking up scrapes and nicks from both sides. But when collisions
are imminent he instinctively veers to the left... a habit he picked up, no
doubt, while a student in the UK. (wink)
