Oil temp. and pressure gauges/senders

Found this info. very useful, as I have a oil temp/oil pressure/volts gauge
panel taken off a scrap Audi Coupe with the intention of fitting in our Audi
90 ('86) and was wondering where the oil temp. sender might be.
Re the oil pressure senders, I have the originals from the Audi Coupe block,
and it seems you don't necessarily have to replace the original warning
switch - this pressure sender fits onto an extension piece into which can be
refitted the original warning switch, the wiring to which is retained
undisturbed (and presumably in this case it doesn't matter which of the two
original switches it is piggybacked on to).
This oil pressure sender is a round metal canister with two wire connectors.
The Haynes wiring diagrams are very hazy about sender connections, and all
the examples I can find only show one wire to this sender. Any guidance re
connecting this up would be appreciated - is the second wire just an earth,
perchance ?

Regards
David

Steve, the stock position for an Audi oil temp sender is in the oil
pressure relief valve, which is a large looking bolt to the left side of
the oil pump (just behind the big pulley). The old style, which used
smaller threads, was used on '80-83 5000 turbos and uses a 170 deg C gauge.
The new style which seems to have a much larger thread size is used on
4000 quattros. Haven't looked at 84s but my 87 uses the wide style. Oil
pressure gauge requires a sender which replaces the stock oil pressure
switch. The correct one made by VDO includes a switch for the idiot light.
Gauge reads 0-150 psi (or 10 bar). New sender and gauge should run < $100.
Older stock 4000Ss have both and you might be able to scrounge one up for
< $20. Careful on which switch you replace. Most Audis have 2-a 1.8bar
which closes at pressure, and a 0.3bar which is closed at low psi oil
pressure. If you use a 4000S sender, replace the white (1.8) switch. The
stock oil pressure gauge reads 0-80 psi (or 5 bar), so it will read full
scale mostly when normal. BTW, I recall VDO makes an oil temp sender that
fits in the oil drain bolt, but I don't know the p/n.

Tony
